TODAY IS NO MUSIC DAY - Think about that for a few seconds. The obvious - no radio or iPods, but what of the unheard background music? Scores played on TV shows or films, even the opening of news segments. The music playing in stores or restaurants. The silly jingles bouncing from your pocket or purse each time a friend rings. Working out or running in pace with your heart or the person next to you rather than your favorite tunes. Or patiently waiting in traffic with no music. This will be my 3rd year of observation. It’s not easy, especially since I always have some tune or another in my head. I have to work hard to push the melody out of thought, or else I may begin tapping my foot and bust out into song ... and we all know that’s not good, but worse — okay, maybe not worse — it breaks my observation. At midnight last night, I turned my phone to vibrate, turned off the sound on my computer, shut off the TV, put away my iPod and read until I fell asleep. This morning a deafening silence fills my room and the first thing that comes to mind is which will be the first song I play in celebration of completing the day. In the past, I have had to take my dog and leave the house and work to enjoy nature -- can't really turn those sounds off. AND nature is never a bad thing. Nor is a day without music. Every year I am left with a new experience and one constant realization; I actually do have one vice - MUSIC. ~Yesenia 21 November 2007
